Year 1 Forest School; Term Autumn 1

Forest School - Autumn Term 1 2013/2014
Year 1 – Mrs Carter’s Class

Session 1

Our first session was a tidy up session as Forest School had become overgrown over the summer holidays.  We needed to collect up all the branches and logs and put them into piles so that Mr Partridge could strim the grass.  We also removed quite a lot of rubbish that had blown into Forest School.

We were also pleased to see that our apple trees had fruit on them so Mrs Fleet helped us pick some that were ready.

There was also a bit of time left over for some potion making.  When we got back to the classroom we all had chance to try some Forest School apples and some blackberries which we also picked.  Delicious!

Session 2

We were set the challenge of making a floor plan for a house using the available materials in Forest School.  We spoke about what was meant by a birds eye view.  We worked in groups of our choosing.

We then showed our designs and spoke about what we liked about them and how we could improve them.

Session 3

As the weather was still mild we took magnifiers, bug pots and identification sheets down to Forest School to see what we could find and identify. There were still plenty of mini beasts around, but not as many as in the summer.  We found worms, woodlice, crane flies, moths, bumble bees, slugs and wasps.

We had a wasps nest in Forest School and the pest control man came during our session.  He explained that they would be angry because he destroyed their nest so we had to keep a safe distance from it.

One of our parents bought in a honeycomb for us to look at.  We all felt it and Mr Cutler explained how the bees collected nectar in their honey stomachs, which was then chewed by the worker bees back at the hive.  The bees then spread the nectar in the honeycombs.  It then dries which makes it gooey and into the honey we know.
