In the lead up to India Day on the Friday, we had looked at and discussed Diwali and why it is an important festival for Hindus. We were given the challenge of drawing and labelling a Diwali scene.
On the day itself, we were all invited to dress up in traditional Indian dress or the colours of the Indian flag. The teachers were amazed at how many people dressed up.
We started the day with a whole school assembly where Mrs Guest showed us where India is on the globe and told us a little bit about our partner school, SAI, in India.
Back in the classrooms we were told that we were going to be comparing the similarities and differences between two festivals of light. Christingle (a Christian festival) and Diwali (a Hindu festival). We were told that to help us compare these festivals we would be making an item that represents each festival, a Christingle Candle and a Diya Lamp Holder.
Before we made the items we discussed in groups how to make them and what the importance of them was, for example; a Diya Lamp lights the way in the home and a Christingle represents the world surrounded by God’s blood and light.
